Breaking: Soludo Replaces Obi of Onitsha as Chairman of Anambra Traditional Rulers Council
In a surprising move, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has officially replaced Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, as the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council (TRC). The announcement was made on Saturday during the launch of the “Operation Udo Ga-Chi” security initiative at the International Convention Centre in Awka.
The new chairman is Igwe Chidubem Iweka III, the traditional ruler of Obosi and a renowned author. Governor Soludo explained that Iweka’s appointment was based on extensive consultations and is in line with the recently amended State Traditional Rulers law.
Reacting to the development, Igwe Achebe issued a statement congratulating his successor and pledging his support. “As Mr. Governor told me, your appointment was based on extensive consultation, which becomes your mandate to lead the TRC on a solid foundation. As your predecessor, I offer my full support and encouragement to you always in your capacity as chairman,” Achebe said.
He further explained his absence from Saturday’s meeting, citing a prior commitment in Lagos, which he said Governor Soludo was aware of. “I wish you very well,” Achebe added, extending his best wishes to the new chairman.
This decision, however, comes amid reports of lingering tensions between Soludo and Achebe. The Obi of Onitsha had previously criticized the governor for his handling of traditional matters, including the suspension of Damian Ezeani, the traditional ruler of Neni, over a chieftaincy title awarded to the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
Achebe had accused the state government of undermining the authority of traditional rulers, describing its actions as the “apogee of the progressive dehumanisation and dismantling of the traditional institution” under Soludo’s leadership.
As Igwe Iweka III assumes his new role, many are watching to see how he will navigate the challenges ahead and whether this change will ease tensions within the state’s traditional institutions.
