The Assemblywoman for Old Estate East Electoral Area in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region, Rebecca Oforiwaa Darko popularly known as Abena Payaase, has formed a community watchdog committee to fight crime in the area.
The community watchdog committee, which was jointly formed with the Koforidua Central Police Command, is to aggressively combat robbery and other social vices that have confronted the electoral area in recent times.
Addressing a durbar to unveil the committee, Abena Payaase, hinted that safeguarding the lives and properties of the electorate was her major priority, hence the formation of the community watchdog committee.
The members are; Bernard Baah, Frank Kofi Essuman, Obed Kofi Zuranu, Padmond Tuffour, Felix Bill, Alexander Quaye, Kofi Koranteng, Jordan, Edmond Ansah and Solomon Frimpong.
She disclosed that the 10 selected watchdog committees were carefully selected by the electoral area and support of the police through fingerprint and biodata screening to make sure that they are not criminals themselves.
To her, the electorate in the Old Estate Electoral Area have faced many armed robbery cases in the past years and that there was the need for the community to strengthen its security to safeguard lives and properties.
The Old Estate East Electoral Area Assemblywoman reiterated her commitment and readiness for peace and harmonious environment, a situation that would be conducive for business and other activities.
She, therefore, called for the cooperation of the public, particularly Old Estate East electorates to enhance police intelligence to improve public safety, adding that strengthening security at the local level was the best way.
Abena Payaase advised parents and guardians in the electoral area to demonstrate high levels of parental responsibility and stop their wards from engaging in criminal activities.
The Old Estate East Electoral Area Assemblywoman explained that adequate security at the community level was equally important as the security of the State.
Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Donkor Baah, from the Ghana Police Service, commended Abena Payaase for putting in place the watchdog committee as some security measures to reduce crime rates in the area.
