Police recovers N2.3 million extorted from Civilian, arrests, detains officers involved
The Nigerian Police Force has apprehended officers accused of extorting N2.3 million from one Nwosu Ndubuisi in Abuja.
This development was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by DSP M.B. Abdulkadir, the Police Public Relations Officer for Zone 7, via X.
Abdulkadir also reported that the full sum of N2.3 million has been successfully recovered and handed back to the victim.
He stated, “Further to the earlier statement issued on the alleged extortion of one Mr. Ndubuisi Nwosu by some officers of Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja, investigation was carried out, the officers allegedly involved in the extortion have been identified and detained, while disciplinary proceedings have commenced against them.
“The sum of N2.3m has been recovered and returned to Mr. Ndubuisi Nwosu.
“The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in Charge of Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja, AIG Benneth C. Igweh, reassures the general public that in line with the transparency and accountability policy of the present Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, the zone will update members of the public on the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings against the defaulters.
“He further affirms that the Zone 7 headquarters remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the rule of law, public safety, security and its mandate of protecting lives and properties.”
The incident was brought to public attention when Harrison Gwamnishu, an X user with the handle #HarrisonBbi18, claimed that officers had extorted N2.3 million from Ndubuisi.
The report detailed how the officers allegedly pressured Ndubuisi to sell his laptop at Banex Plaza in Abuja to cover his bail. In response to these allegations, Igweh ordered an investigation.
