The Nigerian Senate has reacted to the recent increase in electricity tariff by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
Speaking with journalists on Thursday in Abuja, spokesperson for the Senate, Yemi Adaramodu, assured that the red chamber would not abandon Nigerians to their fate.
Adaramodu stressed that the upper legislative assembly, upon resumption from its recess, would decide on the over 300% increase in electricity tariff for customers under the ‘Band A’ classification.
Adaramodu said relevant committees of the Senate are watching the situation and would take a position favourable to Nigerians on its resumption.
“The relevant Senate committees on power are studying the situation,” he said.
“You know we are on recess now. When we resume, they will present their findings to the Senate at the plenary. We won’t abandon Nigerians.”
Adaramodu maintained that the Senate would not show indifference to any policy that would add to the economic burden of Nigerians.
Recall that the federal government, through the NERC, approved an increase in electricity tariff for customers under the ‘Band A’ classification who enjoy 20 hours of daily electricity supply.
Speaking on Wednesday, NERC vice chairman, Musliu Oseni, noted that the Band A customers will begin to pay N225 kilowatt per hour from the current N66.
