Sowore on arrival to Nigeria arrested, released after brief detention in Lagos

Omoyele Sowore, leader of the #RevolutionNow Movement, was detained by the Nigerian Immigration Service at Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Sunday, the day of his return to Nigeria.

This detention coincided with a gathering of his supporters from the Take It Back Movement and other activists who were at the airport to welcome him.

Sowore, who had been in the United States with his family, flew out of Washington Dulles International Airport at 6:14 AM EDT and arrived in Lagos around 9:43 AM WAT.

In a phone call with Vanguard, Sowore reported that the Immigration Service had seized his passport and provided no explanation for his detention.

He was informed that the officials were following orders from higher authorities and needed to consult with Abuja for further instructions.

Sowore later confirmed his release via his X handle, saying, “I have just been released by the Nigerian Immigration after a brief detention and my passport released back to me. #RevolutionNow.”
