Hoodlums attack local govt headquarters, police station in Anambra

Hoodlums numbering about 30 have attacked the Neni Police Station and Anaocha local government headquarters in Anambra State.

The attack took place in the early hours of Thursday.

Eyewitnesses say the attackers were shouting, “DPO must go; he has overstayed; he has been in Anaocha for over 15 years.”

However, it was unclear why they also attacked the local government office, which was very close to the station.

Although a source said the hoodlums also whisked away some police operatives, including some female police personnel, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Tochukwu Ikenga, said no police personnel was taken away.

The attackers were said to have alleged that Anaocha Police Station had become another SARS station, alleging that horrible things happen there.

While confirming that attack, the PPRO said the hoodlums employed IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), insisting that they did not take away any arms or whisked away any police personnel.

According to him, the hoodlums were successfully repelled by the superior firepower of the police operatives on duty, making them flee.
