In response to recent incidents of theft plaguing student communities in Adankolo, Felele, Bassa Village, and Crusher suburb areas of Lokoja, the Chief Magistrate Court in Lokoja has remanded three suspected thieves.
The suspects, identified as Abbas Salisu, Gimba Ibrahim, and Mamud Lawal Kwara, were apprehended following their alleged involvement in a series of attacks targeting students and the theft of valuable items such as smartphones and computers.
Upon their arrest, the suspects reportedly confessed to stealing 33 phones. Subsequently, they were arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Court in Lokoja by the Department of State Service on Tuesday.
The prosecution counsel, Olanrewaju Yahaya, filed four charges against the suspects, including criminal conspiracy, theft of phones valued at One Million Naira, dishonestly receiving stolen properties, and association with a gang of thieves targeting students of Kogi State Polytechnic and Federal University Lokoja.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution urged the Chief Magistrate Court to remand the accused persons in the Koton Karfe Medium Custodian Centre pending further investigation and the hearing of the case.
Despite pleading not guilty to the charges, the trial Chief Magistrate, Abdullahi Mopah, ordered the suspects to be remanded in the Koto Karfe custodial centre. The case was adjourned until May 9th, 2024, for further hearing.
